Hi Liz, I am no pro groomer but I do groom Tessa myself. After a few bad furcuts (where they sheared her like a sheep and lost that precious doodle personality in the fluffy face/teddy bear look), I decided to purchase my own clipper set and scissors. Tessa has wooly fur too, just like a poodle. Almost all curls except for her crimpy-haired ears and legs.

I use a number 10 blade for the lower tummy, private parts, arm pits and even under her ears. It cuts down on the matting that usually occurs in this area. It's quite short so be careful when clipping. When grooming her regularly, I use a number 5F blade (finishing blade) and it leaves her short but still fluffy. Leaving out the "just sheared look" I use the combs too but you need to have the knots brushed out or the fur gets snagged. This is her in few weeks ago when she got her cut from us...

Her tail in this last photo hadn't been groomed yet. It had a few tangles and we decided to leave it for another day. Now it's even and a little more "tailored" :)

When it comes to scissors, I use thinning shears on her face which give her a less scissored and more fluffy messy look after I use the straight scissors.

I love the time I get to spend with Tessa when I'm grooming her. Hope this provides you with some insight :)

My doodle has really wooly hair and I like to keep him trimmed between the groomers..... actually only go to the groomer about twice a year. Well it appears the Wahl clipper blade must be dull because it won't cut him or our minipoodle. Which blade would you suggest I purchase for this wooly hair? I like to use the extendable combs to change around the lengths on various body parts..... I'm desperate..... my attempts with scissors have not gone well and now Seamus looks like he ran through a weed wacker!!!
